Keep An Eye Out For These Common Illnesses and Symptoms in Cats

Skin Allergies: Depending on their severity, skin allergies are the fifth most common condition for cats. Ear infections and skin allergies can be closely, but not always, related. Some pets who have a lot of hair in their ears are often prone to ear infections when yeast builds up in the warm and moist area. Cleaning the ears regularly and grooming excess hair can be a successful preventive measure. Skin allergies can also lead to repetitive ear scratching which can introduce bacteria into your pet’s ear or disturb the natural balance of his skin. Both can lead to infection.

Gum Disease: Gum disease is the most untreated serious, preventable pet disease in cats. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, more than 70 percent of cats develop gum disease by the age of three. Happily, advances in veterinary dentistry available at TVH can prevent and treat serious periodontal (gum) disease. Without routine cleaning, plaque develops into gingivitis and then periodontal disease. This serious disease allows bacteria to enter the blood stream, causing infection and inflammation of a pet’s vital organs. Dental exams and cleaning also identifies and treats fractures, tumors and other dental problems, which often go undetected. Professional care is required to assure good oral health for your pet. It has a significant positive effect on your pet’s general health and wellbeing. TVH offers special rates on dental cleaning to assure professional oral care becomes part of your pet’s yearly treatment.

Common Diseases To Watch in Cats

You have to be sharp to notice symptoms in cats!

Urinary Tract Diseases: Stress, bacteria or diet can cause urinary tract diseases and are more common in male cats because of the position and size of their urethra. Watch where your cat urinates. Symptoms include urinating excessively outside the litter box on a horizontal surface such as the floor. It differs from marking which usually occurs in small amounts on vertical surfaces such as a wall. Giving your cat canned food can help prevent this condition.

Hyperthyroidism: This disease is a potentially life-threatening condition that can be common in older cats. Weight loss is an early symptom and, if left untreated, hyperthyroidism can cause high blood pressure, heart problems and death. The report from VPI Heath Insurance states that: “You can treat hyperthyroidism with medication but the ideal is to blast the thyroid with an injection of radioactive iodine. Clients are becoming more aware of it which is a good thing.”

Arthritis: Cats have evolved to hide discomfort and pain, so they’ll just lie around if they’re stiff or in pain which makes joint diseases difficult to notice. Because the cat tries to hide it, arthritis is usually discovered during annual physical exams unless it becomes severely debilitating.
